Let’s get TEXTUAL
Booktalk about Sappho.
Hosted by Ilya Edvakov
Sappho is no ordinary poet. Little is known about her life. Little has survived from her works.
But for the most of last three millennia, the savage polemics always have enveloped Sappho — about her work, her family life, her social status and, above all, her sexuality.
The greatest problem for Sappho studies is that there’s so little Sappho to study. It would be hard to think of another poet whose status is so disproportionate to the size of her surviving body of work.
Her work is direct, impassioned, honest and simple.
Her celebration of love has echoed through the centuries not through the work of translators and imitators, but also in all those other voices that have dared declare their love to be radically important, more compelling and serious than abstract notions.
